2011 MTV VMA Nominees Announced

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards may also be known as its more colloquial name: ladies' night.

Nominees for this year's VMAs were announced Wednesday night by Katy Perry, who leads the pack with an impressive nine VMA nominations, including “Video of the Year” and “Best Female Video,” for her explosive hit, “Firework." She also got nods for “Best Pop Video” for Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), and “Best Special Effects” for “E.T.” featuring Kanye West.

On Perry's heels are Adele and Kanye West with seven each, followed by Bruno Mars (four) and Beyoncé, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Nicki Minaj (three apiece). First time VMA nominees Foster the People, Manchester Orchestra and Tyler, The Creator, each have two nods as do the Beastie Boys, Chris Brown, Pitbull and Lil Wayne.

Adele's nominations are all for her "Rolling in the Deep," while West's encompass three songs: "All Of The Lights" featuring Rihanna & Kid Cudi (Male Video, Hip-Hop Video and Collaboration); Perry's "E.T." (Collaboration); and West's own "Power" (Art Direction). Three of Mars' nominations are for "Grenade;" his "The Lazy Song" is contending for the Choreography Moonman.

Competition for video of the year pits three massive hits -- Perry's "Firework," Mars' "Grenade" and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" -- against Tyler, The Creator's "Yonkers" and the Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise."

Best New Artist nominees are heavy on hip-hop with Wiz Khalifa ("Black and Yellow"); Tyler, The Creator ("Yonkers"); Big Sean ("My Last" featuring Chris Brown); and Internet phenomenon Kreayshawn "Gucci Gucci" going up against Foster The People ("Pumped Up Kicks").

Like many VMA ceremonies, the antics of a performer tend to drown out the trophy tallies. The big winner in 2010 with eight trophies was Lady Gaga, who is best remembered for showing up in a dress made of meat. This year she is up for Female Video ("Born This Way") and Choreography ("Judas") -- two categories she won in at last year's ceremony -- plus Art Direction ("Judas").

Other winners from last year nominated for 2011 awards are Eminem (Male Video, Direction, Cinematography), Thirty Seconds to Mars (Direction, Cinematography, Editing) and the Black Keys (Rock Video).

The Video Music Awards for the 14 categories announced Wednesday evening (July 20) will be handed out Aug. 28 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.
