Lea Michele, Chris Colfer And Cory Monteith Will Leave ‘Glee’ After Season 3!

While creator Ryan Murphy has hinted at this possibility, it is still a very sad day for Glee fans everywhere as an official announcement today confirmed that several main cast members won’t return after they graduate at the end of next season!

Obsessive fans of the hit musical-inspired show Glee have known since season one that senior year and graduation loomed ahead in a depressing High School Musical-reminiscent way, and with  main characters Rachel Berry and Finn Hudson starting season 1 as sophomores, it was clear that by the end of season 3 they could be gone… and now Ryan Murphy has confirmed that Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith will all be leaving after next season!

The scriptwriter insists several characters had to leave because they are supposed to be school students, and therefore they would graduate and go on to college or continue their lives.

The Hollywood Reporter spoke to creator Ryan Murphy , who acknowledged the difficult choice he had to make, saying,  “You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”

While it will be a difficult transition without Rachel Berry (Lea), Finn Hudson, ( Cory), and Kurt Hummel (Chris), it is the most logical choice (especially considering Cory is almost 30– we can’t stay in high school forever!). Plus, according to Ryan, Lea Michele and Chris Colfer both thought it was a good idea: “They both trust the writing and trust me and felt it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top.”

But what about the characters like Britney(Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera) whose ages have never been clearly identified? According to Ryan, that all will be answered on the season 3 premiere on September 20th!

As for what season 3 will hold…don’t worry Lea Michele fans! Her story is far from over! This season will focus on “more of what her dreams are beyond high school and how she plans on getting them.” This storyline may sound familiar to Ryan Murphy as he acknowledges that “that was what my senior year was about.”
