Amy Winehouse has been found dead in London at the age of 27.
Her cause of death is unknown, but the troubled singer had long battled alcohol and drug abuse.
Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse was found dead at 4 p.m. on July 23 in her London apartment.
She had checked into the Priory Clinic, a treatment facility in London, this past May. And although it was never confirmed what she was seeking treatment for, the clinic is known for dealing with drug and alcohol addiction, as well as psychiatric conditions.
Amy Winehouse‘s July 23 death hit all of her friends and loved ones hard, and many have taken to sharing their grief online and remembering her great tunes.
Amy Winehouse reportedly died from a ''dodgy'' ecstasy tablet according to friends.
Amy Winehouse is believed to have died from a mix of ecstasy and alcohol.
The tragic singer died at her home in North London yesterday (23.07.11) and although police have said it would be "inappropriate" to speculate before the post-mortem is carried out, friends believe a "dodgy" ecstasy tablet killed her.
A pal told the Sunday Mirror: "She has spent the last seven days on a massive bender and people were saying she's going to drink herself to death.
"It was an ecstasy overdose. She could do cocaine until the cows come home. But this was obviously a dodgy pill."
MTV producer Danny Panthaki claimed his friend's boyfriend was one of the first policemen at the scene and backed up the overdose story saying: "My friend's boyfriend is a policeman and he's the one who found Amy Winehouse dead. Overdosed on ecstasy."
Although police and ambulances reported to the scene within five minutes of the emergency call being made, the 27-year-old singer was dead when they arrived.
Superintendent Raj Kohli, of London's Metropolitan Police said: "No post mortem has taken place and it would be inappropriate to speculate on a cause of death.
"On arrival, officers found the body of a 27-year-old woman who was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been informed, and we can confirm it was Amy Winehouse. The death of any person is a sad time for friends and family, especially in the case of a person such as Amy Winehouse, who was known both nationally and internationally".
Amy, who was 27, is being remembered for her incredible contributions to the music world during her brief life. Superstar Lady Gaga took to Twitter to deliver her message of grief, writing, “Amy changed pop music forever, I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her. She lived jazz, she lived the blues.”
Amy’s close friend Russell Brand wrote a lengthier remembrance on his official website: “From her oddly dainty presence that voice, a voice that seemed not to come from her but from somewhere beyond even Billie and Ella, from the font of all greatness. A voice that was filled with such power and pain that it was at once entirely human yet laced with the divine. My ears, my mouth, my heart and mind all instantly opened.
Winehouse. Winehouse? Winehouse! … She wasn’t just some hapless wannabe, yet another f–k-up nit who was never gonna make it, nor was she even a ten-a-penny-chanteuse enjoying her fifteen minutes. She was a f–king genius.”
Meanwhile, fans are showing their appreciation through iTunes, where Amy’s music has been hovering in the top 10 ever since her death was announced.
The news of her passing is devastating, but unfortunately, not the first we’ve heard of the singer’s troubled life. She had a highly publicized — and extremely tumultuous — relationship with music video producer Blake Fielder-Civil, whom she married in May 2007.
The couple quickly became the subject of controversy, with news of their drug use dominating headlines, and Amy even admitted that she often attacked Blake after having too much to drink. They were photographed bleeding in public in Aug. 2007, but it was later determined that Amy’s injuries had been self-inflicted. The two divorced in July 2009.
An irrefutably talented musician, Amy’s 2003 debut album, Frank, became certified triple-platinum after selling more than 900,000 copies in the UK. But it was her 2006 follow-up album, Back to Black, that made her a household name in the United States — and earned her five Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Vocal Album. Her single, “Rehab,” won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Song of the Year and Record of the Year, while Amy took home the Best New Artist award herself.
But rather than simply mourn this tragic loss, let’s choose to also celebrate the incredible talent Amy shared with us all during her brief time in this world. Ladies and gentlemen, “Rehab”.
